The Bacteriology Department is integrally involved in the diagnosis of infection through the direct culture of pathogenic organism from clinical material. Utilizing an array of conventional methods as well approved contemporary identification systems; the department offers precise, rapid identification of common pathogens. It combines this with a system of Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing in conformity with the highest international standards of quality and clinical relevance (FDA, CLS-formerly NCCLS).

Reports include a semi-quantitative microscopic evaluation of an appropriately stained smear of the clinical material in order to provide the physician with as comprehensive a report as possible. In addition, a referral service is offered for investigations such as Mycology, T. B. culture and Virology that are not performed by the department. Bacteriology boasts a staff of highly trained, professionally motivated individuals who are committed to providing the highest quality diagnostic service to the healthcare profession.
