Regulating Body for Medical Labs

In November 2005 the Jamaica government introduced legislation providing for a new regulatory body for medical laboratories operating in the country. The body to be known as the Medical Laboratories Council will regulate and control the activities of Medical Labs and collection centres across the island.

The new regulatory body forms part of the government’s Health Facilities Act 2005.

The bill provides for the licensing of all medical laboratories and would also include official accreditation of laboratories, especially if their services are to be used by clients outside of Jamaica.

A regional accreditation body is also said to be in the making which could apply to the ISO standards across CARICOM.
